Your eligibility

If you are aged 65 years or older (50 or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) and you find it hard to shop or prepare a home cooked meal, you may qualify to receive subsidised, home delivered meals through Meals on Wheels.

Some of the reasons why an older Australian may benefit from home delivery of healthy and nutritious meals include that they may:

  • be less mobile or have balance issues
  • be unwell or have recently come out of hospital
  • find it difficult to get out
  • find it hard to shop or cook
  • have lost weight without trying
  • need nutritional help
  • have had a recent bereavement

To be able to receive meals from Meals on Wheels at a subsidised rate, you must first register with My Aged Care and have an aged care assessment. My Aged Care is the starting point to receive Australian Government-funded aged care services, including Meals on Wheels.

You can either register yourself, or a family member, friend, doctor or hospital can refer you. Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or go to for information.

If you are a young person with disability, contact the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) on 1800 800 110 or visit for information.

The Commonwealth Home Support Program

The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) is the first level of aged care services for older people who need help to keep living independently at home and in their community.

If you just need help with some daily tasks to stay living at home, CHSP services may be right for you. These services might also help you if you have had a setback and need support for just a short time to help you get back on your feet.

If you are eligible for meal delivery under the Commonwealth Home Support Program, you can receive meals from Meals on Wheels at a subsidised rate.

Home Care Package Program

Home Care Packages (HCP) are the next level of care at home and in the community. They are designed for people with more complex care needs than what the CHSP can provide.

A Home Care Package is a coordinated package of care and services that helps you to live independently in your own home for as long as you can.

There are four levels of Home Care Packages to help meet different care needs. During your aged care assessment, your assessor will discuss your needs and find out which package level is best to meet them.

If you are on a Home Care Package, meal delivery from Meals on Wheels can be part-funded through your package.

The NDIS provides people who have permanent and significant disability with supports and services that help them to participate in the community, be more independent and reach their goals. An approved NDIS plan can include meal services.

If you are an NDIS participant and you use a plan manager or manage your own plan, and meal delivery is included in your plan under household tasks, we can provide meals for you out of your package. Call us directly on 02 9144 2044 to register and place an order.

If you are not eligible for subsidised support, you can still access Meals on Wheels as a private client for a special rate.
